For measuring roughness, the classic stylus instruments are well established. However, the problems with the characterization of a surface by means of profiles are also known: The measurement statement is limited to the direction of the profile line. Only a few components have non-directional structures on the surface. This means inevitably that a line along a certain direction cannot make a significant statement about the roughness or texture of a surface. A fast measurement of surfaces instead of individual profiles is not possible. In addition, the resolution of the tactile devices used is often too low. Some components have trenches that are inaccessible for the probe tip. In more and more applications, the unavoidable damage of the surface caused by the applied contact force becomes a problem.
Modern optical measuring instruments enable non-contact and thus non-destructive surface measurement. This means that even sensitive and soft surfaces can be examined without damage. Optical roughness measurements are completed within a few seconds and profile lines can be laid through the surface in any direction. In addition, complete topography of components can also be determined in 3D measurement mode. In addition to roughness, many other surface parameters such as waviness, flatness and film thickness can be evaluated quantitatively in three dimensions. The high resolution and excellent repeatability of the FRT systems enable reliable measurement of surface roughness and exact compliance of product quality. Due to the short measuring times and the user-friendly operation, operator self-control is possible.
Consistent surface quality is decisive for the quality of the final product. The quantifiability of the surface by accepted and verifiable standards such as ISO 4287 or ISO 25178 is therefore an important basis for error-free production processes. FRT’s optical 3D measuring systems provide you with easy-to-use tools for optical roughness measurement according to internationally standardized parameters. The comparability of all the measurements considered is also indispensable. This applies to simple profiles as well as to complete three-dimensional surface areas. The formulas and processes for profile measurement specified in the DIN/ISO regulations are transferred to the surface. Of course, the corresponding filter functions are also taken into account. The clou is a filter routine for calculating the corresponding roughness values for the use of a probe tip with selected geometry, since the optical data usually provide a significantly higher resolution than tactile data and are therefore not directly comparable with them. With the simulation of a probe tip, the comparison values for suppliers or customers are thus provided in addition to the better resolved data for your own production.
